A Northumbria Police sergeant who was posthumously awarded the Queen’s Commendation for Bravery is being remembered by Northumbria Police Federation today.
Sergeant William Forth, who was known as Bill, was only 34 when he died on 21 March 1993.
He had responded to a routine call and, on arriving in Sunniside, Whickham near Gateshead, was beaten and stabbed to death.

Nick Munnelly, chair of Northumbria Police Federation, said: “Today we remember Sergeant Forth whose tragic death is a reminder of the dangers police officers face day in and day out as they serve their communities.
“He responded to a call for assistance, just as officers the length and breadth of the country do every day, and paid the ultimate price.
“Our thoughts remain with the family, friends and former colleagues he left behind.”
A memorial stone commemorating Sgt Forth was unveiled in Sunniside on 24 March 1995.
