Police-specific mental health helpline rolled out nationally

July 21, 2025

A 24/7 confidential crisis line for police officers and staff needing immediate mental health support has been rolled out across England and Wales.

Launched by Oscar Kilo, the National Police Wellbeing Service, the Mental Health Crisis Line is designed to provide immediate support to those in the police going through difficulties such as suicidal thoughts, self-harm, grief and trauma.

Calls are handled by trained counsellors with an understanding of the policing world and its demands and pressures.

They will provide callers with immediate help by keeping them safe and secure in times of crisis, signposting them to further support and arranging follow-up calls where necessary.

Any information these operators receive will never be shared with the Force in any capacity, including occupational health and line management.

The national rollout comes a year after the call line was piloted throughout the North-East forces, including Northumbria.

Branch chair Nick Munnelly gave his endorsement to the service, saying: “After being trialled in the North East in the last 12 months, I am delighted to see the helpline now rolled out nationally.

“This new helpline is a vital resource that recognises the unique pressures faced by those who serve in policing.

Our members often deal with incredibly traumatic situations – things that stay with you long after a shift ends. Having access to confidential, specialist support, 24 hours a day, is not just welcome, it’s essential.

“This service ensures that no one has to face their darkest moments alone, and that help is always available, no matter the time of day or night.”

Anthony Pattison, the branch’s equality and health management lead, has echoed Nick’s support for the crisis line: “We know that policing can take a serious toll on mental health, and breaking the stigma around speaking up and seeking support is one of the most important challenges we face as a service.

“This helpline is a significant step forward in tackling that issue head-on. I hope our members are reassured to hear that the people answering the calls are not only trained professionals, but also understand the realities of life on the front line.

“I would encourage any colleague who is struggling to reach out – you will be heard, and you will be supported.”

Oscar Kilo has set the Mental Health Crisis Line up to fulfil its overarching remit of bringing top-standard wellbeing support to those who wear the badge, which includes a commitment to suicide prevention within policing.

The organisation has worked with police and crime commissioners across the country to make the helpline live and operational, with backing from the Association of Police and Crime Commissioners (APCC).
