To mark Response Policing Week (20–26 April), Northumbria Police Federation will gift each of the Force’s 1,200 response officers a £5 voucher for Greggs.
The initiative aims to recognise the relentless commitment of officers who are often first on the scene and form the backbone of frontline policing.
Long shifts, unpredictable demands and constant pressure make their role one of the most challenging in modern policing – and this small gesture is intended as a token of appreciation for the vital work they do.
To ensure the vouchers are delivered personally, Federation representatives are embarking on an ambitious week-long effort. The team will visit 12 bases across the Force area, returning to each location four times throughout the week to catch as many officers as possible across different shifts.
Supporting members
Branch chair Nick Munnelly said: “Getting to each of the 12 bases four times is a significant task, but one our team is determined to see through. We know this is a simple gesture, but it carries a lot of appreciation.
“At Northumbria Police Federation, we are committed to supporting all our members – whether through dedicated networks, financial support for Force events, or sponsoring individual officers.
“This is just one of many initiatives we deliver to support those we represent.
“If the £5 Greggs voucher gives someone the chance to grab a coffee or a bite to eat during or after a hectic shift, then that’s exactly what it’s there for.”
Response officers
Nick said going out and visiting each team reflects the Federation’s commitment not just to advocacy, but to visible, direct support. He continued:
“By showing up in person, representatives hope to connect with officers face-to-face, reinforcing that their work is recognised and valued.
“We also appreciate that response officers are extremely busy, and it’s unlikely they always have the time to visit the Federation with concerns or feedback. By going out and seeing them, we not only want to say thank you to our members but also hope to make it easier than ever for them to engage with the Federation.”
Nick added: “This is about appreciation, visibility and morale – acknowledging the daily challenges response officers face and offering a small token of thanks during a week dedicated to their vital role.”
